Let’s Do Lunch @ Sean’s Kitchen
October 16, 2010
Unless I’m in Vegas, I make all possible efforts to stay out of the casino for two reasons – it always has this distinctive funky smell and my awareness of whether it’s day or night and whether it’s rain, hail or shining outside goes completely out the window.
But this time, I couldn’t help it with Crave Sydney International Food Festival’s ‘Let’s Do Lunch’ happening over at Sean’s Kitchen, which is situated inside Star City Casino. Surprisingly, being up all the way on level two the spinning sounds of poker machines are in the distance. Instead the restaurant, which feels more like a large private dining room, only clings and pangs with the movement of pots and pans from the open kitchen.
Keeping up with the expectations of fine dining for good service, we are attentively served bread for starters and before we know it, our three-plated Moroccan spiced lamb and olive tagine with fragrant green barley couscous is sitting in front of us. It also comes with a small dish of what taste and appears to be yoghurt sprinkled with pistachio nuts.
The spiced lamb and olive tagine has a nice kick that comes through the generous serving of sauce at the back of throat, reminding me vaguely of eating a mild lamb vindaloo. The chunks of lamb are cooked to perfection, shredding at the stab of the fork while digging around for olives is like digging for gold but when they’re in the mouth they’re a nice sour surprise.
However, using a knife and fork to eat the couscous proves quite a challenge and wanting to eat up all that sauce in the tangine, I end up having to scrap the tagine into into the bowl of couscous and topping the mix with the yoghurt, to give it a hint of freshness, that slightly melts and combines with the rest of the dish.
